I dig my own clay from country Victoria.
The clay then undergoes a process of sifting, taking out stones and sticks. It is then dried out, crushed into find powder. Then I soak the clay in water for 24 hours before getting it just the right consistency to wedge (similar to kneading dough) The clay is then ready to throw on the wheel. Once done the pieces are dried in a drying shelf for at least two weeks. Shelf drying prevents pieces cracking and exploding in the kiln. This stage of the clayis called green-ware.
In the first step in the firing process, with temperatures reaching 1000°C, they stay in the kiln for at least 24 hours, to make sure there is absolutely no water in the clay.
Then it's time to paint them with glaze. I hand mix minerals to create my very own glazes. Once they have four coats they then go back in the kiln for the final firing. This is called glaze firing and reaches temperatures of 1300°C. The pieces will stay in there for over 24 hours to cool down. The process is now nearly finished. A little bit of sanding on the bottoms to insure no scratches on your furniture and they are ready to be packaged and sent to their new homes.
