  • My Personal Story | DC Ceramics Studio

My Personal Story I am a keen advocate for the prevention of homelessness and family violence, knowing from experience how these two issues intersect. I believe an individual’s home and sense of belonging is ever so precious. Home is a place where one should feel safe, loved and free to be themselves. It is a place where families should find their feet and grow together. I have become an advocate for others in similar position, courageously sharing my story at the Vinnies CEO Sleepout. I have contributed my experiences in multiple ways to support the work of McAuley House for Women and inform the community of the devastating impacts of homelessness and family violence. My personal story was included in submissions to the Victorian Government Royal Commission into Mental Health Services and a Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry into Homelessness. ABC Breakfast News. Suddenly jobless and alone in a foreign country, Diana only had a car for her and her son to sleep in while he was in the midst of year 12 exams. Diana sat down to talk to us about not only how she survived the experience with the help of St Vinnie's, but how she's gone on to start her own business, become an outspoken advocate for domestic violence survivors as well as St Vincent De Pauls, and how she always managed to stay positive. As we approach another freezing winter and Chris get's ready to take part in his 6th CEO sleepout, it's people like Diana who we can really help, and genuinely turn lives around. My story is last on the online broadcast. How I become homeless is all to common. I believe the first hurdle to overcome the stigma related to homelessness, is the power of speaking out, shearing my story. A story that can happen to anyone. I hope my story inspires others to make positive changes to help those who aren't as fortunate. Vinnies Victoria's annual flagship fundraiser, Vinnies CEO Sleepout, was held on Thursday 17 June 2021. The event saw business and community leaders sleep rough on one of the longest nights of the year to raise awareness and much needed funds to help change the lives of Victorians experiencing homelessness. This year’s theme is Remove the Risk – as homelessness in Victoria is expected to rise by 13% due to the pandemic, according to the Equity Economics report – Vinnies believes that one sector alone can't ‘solve’ the issue of homelessness but, through working together as a community, real changes can be made. For the second year, due to Victoria's COVID-19 restrictions, Vinnies hosted an online event featuring powerful stories of people who have experienced homelessness and have been assisted by Vinnies Victoria. Australia’s much loved actor and producer, David Wenham, generously donated his time to MC the two hour broadcast and share his own personal connection with Vinnies. • Raku Pottery | DC Ceramics Studio

Diana Connell EARTH TO ART What is Raku? Scroll Down Anchor 1 “happiness by chance” Raku The incredible beauty of Raku is mesmerising. When you understand the technique, you will then understand the meaning of Raku. “happiness by chance” Traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies, raku ware (楽焼, raku-yaki) is a famous type of Japanese pottery. This art form was highly appreciated by tea masters for the purity and unpretentiousness of the objects, especially chawan tea bowls. With a history stretching back to 1580, raku ware remains today the most sought after of Japanese ceramics. The word "Raku" can be translated to mean "happiness by chance," which neatly sums up the firing process. The bisque (ware that has been fired once) fired pieces of pottery are glazed then placed in the kiln for a second firing and then removed once they become red hot, around 1005°c, placed in a metal container of combustible material, like sawdust or paper. Raku ware are cracked and smoky pieces. This technique requires persistence and patience and no one piece is the same. The quality of the chips, the climate of the day, the oxidation or the reduction means no piece will exactly have the same dimensions and appearance. There is no way to control the patterns that are created, it's just happiness by chance! The happiness of slowly creating, by hand, unique pieces. The happiness of painting enamel on their contours. Then the happiness of bringing them out of the hot kiln to place them into the wood chips and newspaper. Finally, the happiness of revealing what fire & smoke has randomly transformed with so many variables. Diana is dedicated to the art of Raku pottery How to take care of Raku pottery To clean a Raku Pottery hold it under running water (lukewarm) and gently remove any tea residue. After washing it, gently dry with a clean cloth. Do NOT let it sit in water, as the cup can fall apart. Do NOT put it in a dishwasher! TIP: As tea has an antibacterial effect, using dish soap is not necessary. If absolutely needed, only use completely natural dish soap, because Raku Pottery absorbs it in its pores. Feather Raku Hair Raku GUARANTEE WE GUARANTEE SAFE DELIVERY - if the product gets damaged in transit we will replace or make a refund. STORAGE When not in use, dry the cup with a towel. Afterward, especially during the wet season put it in an airy place and keep it dry. Otherwise, the cup could be damaged and/or develop a damp smell. If the smell clings to the cup, use it every day. The smell is usually gone in a week. Naked Raku INITIATION OF RAKU POTTERY For Raku Pottery, we strongly recommend initiating it before first use. Raku Pottery is very porous due to the method of firing, which makes it very fragile. Initiating it with a very fine powder (traditionally rice powder) makes it much more stable, protects it from breaking as easily, sudden heat change damaging it or the tea causing discolouration. Steps: Put a cup of rice in lukewarm water. Stir it around, so the rice powder comes off the rice and makes the water opaque. ATTENTION: Make sure the water is lukewarm (about room temperature), not hot or boiling, as the sudden big temperature change can break a new bowl! Put the Raku in the water so it is covered and let it sit there for about 15 minutes, so the rice powder enters the pores. Rinse the rice powdered water off in lukewarm water. Gently dry it with a clean cloth and let it sit for about a day, so all water leaves the pores and the powder sets.

  • Who We Are | DC Ceramics Studio

About Us Anchor 1 Hi, I'm Diana Connell The feeling of forming a lump of clay into a piece of art, knowing I’ve made something that will take pride in people’s homes is very rewarding. Each piece is made personally and with great care. A love for creating art has helped me get through difficult stages of my life, from big landscape oil paintings to bespoke woodwork. Therefore, when my daughter gave me a bag of hand build clay and five pottery tools for my birthday in 2020, my family and friends all known pottery was going to become another artistic outlet for me. After that first bag of clay, a pottery wheel was soon added. I would sit down with some music playing and lose myself in that moment. Pottery throwing came so naturally to me and the business was a natural progression from there. I brought a kiln, found the style that suits me and now I get the joy of watching something I poured love into at every step of the process go out and bring joy to others. DC Ceramics Studio, Diana Mission DC Ceramics Studio is a small, boutique ceramics studio in Sunshine North, Melbourne. While I'm dedicated to producing a range of stunning home décor, I'm also pushing the boundaries to bring clay to life in different forms of firing, with my passion of Raku technique. DC Ceramics Studio focuses on creating that individual piece you can't find anywhere else. DC Ceramics Studio was founded in early 2021 by Diana Connell who had a vision to create bespoke ceramics. Located in Melbourne's West our talented team design a range of functional, handcrafted earthenware, stoneware and porcelain ceramics from our studio. At DC Ceramics we offer hand-thrown pottery, every single piece has a unique, decorative beauty combined with functional simplicity. Our work does not have a significant carbon footprint compared to mass produced ceramics, but that does not exempt us from thinking about and taking responsibility for our impact - no matter how small.
